Year 2, Day 365

The last song for this year is Drown The Sound by Frankie McQueen.

Alright guys. It's all over now...again. I took a year off between the first and second year of this thing and I'm glad I did. It helped to show how much I've changed. I didn't know just how far over my tastes had shifted until I was comparing it with Anna. Man, did I listen to pop. It really was too much considering how far down the talent-challenged windpipe it fell. So in the first year, apart from some nuggets of brilliance, was generally worse music than the next year. Though, I have had some bad tunes up this year as well, but hey, everyone has that band or artist that they are ashamed to like. I'm just beyond caring how others feel about it.

I chose to end this year off with a local band that is a little different than the other stuff I've shown you. This is mostly due in part to the fact that I know 2/3 of the band members. Why? We worked together. It is quite strange (at least to me) that these guys are so talented and yet not doing this full time, but they're working on it. In fact I'm pretty sure they've been touring around all summer. Obviously not to Russia where most of you guys are, but maybe one day? Anyway, they are great guys who love playing music, and they're good at it. They are also pretty damn great live. So check it out if you can and you should be able to find the album on iTunes if you like them enough to buy it. The link for that is here because finding it on your own is ridiculous.

The gap between my years writing will lead you to the conclusion that this is going to happen again, and that is true. I ended this year at a perfect spot because I'm headed back into another year of school, which will be more intense, and I don't think I will have the brain power to come up with anything decent to say and show you. Fear not, I will most likely be back in a year, and on days I really need to unleash hell I will post, but that might not be a lot. So in my absence I hope you continue to find new music and show it to others because music is here for all of us to enjoy. Keep it fun! I'll be back to chronicling my favorites before you know it.

Year 2, Day 364

Hey guys. So today's song is When I'm Up (I Can't Get Down) performed by Great Big Sea.

I was going to do a song from Nirvana for today, it being Smells Like Teen Spirit , but I have had a different song stuck in my head all day and I feel like if I don't display it I'll never make it get out of my brain. Therefore today I have this. I also attached the Nirvana song anyway, so in a way you get double the tunage. So as the guy in the video said, this was originally done by the Oysterband. I see why they would be confused that some Canadian band made this a hit because they were so unknown in England. It's amazing by the fact that this song even got down here. I chose to show you guys the Canadian one because, well, I am Canadian and I grew up with their version. The original is here, and it is good, but not the one I know. The Canadian band is from Newfoundland. It's obvious from their accents. Spoiler alert to anyone not from Canada: only Newfies sound like that. I sadly don't have an accent....well I don't think so at least. Although I was told by some British dude that I have the most Canadian accent of my friends. I'm not sure what that means. If you guys could explain to me what you think a Canadian accent sounds like please tell me! I'd love to know how I sound to other people.

Hey. So today's song is Rock Of The Ages by Def Leppard.

I think we all know where I was reminded of this song...I don't need to explain it again. So a few days ago my sister and I got into a fight (shocker) which has resulted in me not wanting to talk to her. She pisses me off because she accuses me of being a bitch when I do something nice for her, and then while I'm still fuming about her audacity, ten minutes after our fight she will pretend nothing happened and think we're best friends again. She's been doing this for years and I'm tired of it. Therefore I have been ignoring her texts and calls all day. I got home and checked Facebook only to find 22 messages from her (all sent in the same minute) of pictures of cartoon cats..... I don't..... How is this supposed to make me less angry? Could some please explain this logic to me because I have no clue what that was supposed to accomplish. Now this song. First off this band is legendary, so I really don't need to tell you about them, and this song is pretty bad ass. I enjoy it. So give it a listen, because even if it's not your kind of thing, you should know who Def Leppard is.

Year 2, Day 362

Hi. Today I give you The Gambler by Kenny Rogers.

Like I said I've been watching Supernatural. A lot of it. I heard that they're bringing Bobby back and he was really the only good thing about it. When I first starting watching Supernatural, Sam was my favorite. After a few seasons though they made him so absolutely ridiculous that I lost my love for him, so I started focusing on the humor of Dean, which is never in short supply. Later they brought in Bobby Singer and I can't tell you how much I like Bobby. He is my favorite character ever. Seriously what an awesome guy! Then came Castiel and I love him too. Unfortunately I had left the Supernatural fan base because Sam was being dumb, Cas went full dark side crazy and they killed Bobby. I was done with the series, but since they are bringing him back I decided to start watching again and have re watched up to the end of season six. I started season one a week ago....  Yes it's insane, but I needed the distraction. Anyway this song was played in an episode and I found myself singing all the words even though I was unaware I knew them. Clearly I heard it a lot in my childhood, so I was curious if you had too. Check it out.

Hello. So today's song is Wasting All These Tears by Cassadee Pope.

I've mentioned before that one of my favorite bands is Hey Monday, and that they broke up. Cassadee then went of The Voice and won, and now she's doing country music. Now I like her, I like how she sounds, but I definitely prefer her rock music from the Hey Monday days more than her new country stuff. Still this song relates to my feelings today because I've been having crying fits today sue to some aggravating people. It's not boy trouble, but it still is enough that I've retreated to my bedroom for the remainder of the day. The last couple years I've tried not to be introverted and be more social, but days like the one I had today make me wonder why I'm even trying. So this is the song for today, because nothing is better for girls when they cry than angry women country music. Truth.

Sorry I'm so late today guys. Strangely this is the first time I've been on my computer today. So I found this song because of an ad. I've been watching Supernatural on my computer and every time you click anything, an ad will pop up. Most of them I close before they can load, but this one I didn't get to before it started playing. Then I just didn't close it because I liked the song. I like how simple they made this video. The fact that their is only a few musicians and some dancers on a stage for the whole video makes the song stand on its own. I genuinely enjoy this one, so I thought I'd share it. Check it out.

I have heard this song so much. I know the words, I can sing along and rock out to it. Through my whole existence of listening to this, I never knew what it was called or who it was by. That's mostly because I used to not care at all who released the song. Now I do and I wanted to be sure I never forgot. Hence why this is today's song. I kind of love that this band is classified as 'psychedelic rock.' It just makes me smile. I also agree with the top comment a bit. I too grew up listening to MGMT, The White Stripes, Mumford & Sons, Muse, Ben Howard and other stuff like that (at least when I was in my dad's car) even though I didn't know it at the time. It's good music and regardless of whether you like it or not, these guys may have inspired one of your favorite artists to get into music, so I think it's important to at least listen to their music before saying it's shit. ...Yeah, that is my opinion. Anyway check out the song.

Hi. So today's song is Next To Me by Emeli Sande.

This is a song that plays on the radio and always changes my mood. Anytime I hear it I start belting the lyrics and pretending I can be as soulful as she is. I don't quite pull it off though... I feel strongly about this song, because it's so perfect. I don't know how I can describe it. I'm not the only one that feels this way about it though, because Emeli has a few awards with this song. In order they are Best Song at the 2012 MOBO Awards, British Single of the Year at the 2013 Brit Awards. Those are when she was just nominated and didn't actually win. The winning ones are PRS for Music Most Performed Work at the 2013 Ivor Novello Awards, and the one that stands out the most to me as being prestigious, she won Best Song Musically and Lyrically at the 2013 Ivor Novello Awards. Keep in mind those are just for this song, she's racked in a total of eighteen wins for herself along the way. It's an amazing song, and if you've never heard it you should really give it a chance.

Sup. So today I give you Don't Let Your Feet Touch Ground by Ash Koley.

I can't believe how many of you are still with me. Honestly, my friends have stopped reading my blog, and it's become something I do without feeling an impact on anyone. Then I see how many people from all different countries are looking at this. To you, who's here right now, I just wanted to say thank you. For listening, for reading, for generally being around. It makes me feel great.... kind of like I'm ten feet tall. This is an incredibly underrated song, considering how many TV shows and films I've heard it in. So I wanted to give it some credit. It's a perfect song for today because it makes me feel so happy and free. Which sounds weird...but that's what it does. I have to talk about the music video a little bit. It's fantastic! I love the way they used the people on the piano steps, and how the piano player used their hands as keys. It's a great concept where they don't need a bunch of props or fancy colors to make an impression, they just need people. It's really cool so you should check it out.

Hey everybody. So today's song is Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke ft. T.I & Pharrell.

Okay, this song has been following me around. Clearly they play it every other song because every time I get in the car it plays. Every Single Time. I didn't really give it much thought at first.  It was a catchy song and that was it. Then Sammy showed me what she thought was the music video. It seemed really strange, and it's the link I attached. Then I found everyone freaking out about the message, so I looked up the lyrics. Wow. If someone said stuff like that to me I would nut him. By nut him I'm referring to crotch punching...or kicking. Whatever causes pain. After that I felt kind of enraged and wanted to see if I missed the message in the video. Well the video I found was definitely not the one I expected. I wont give you the link, but look up the unrated music video if you want to know. I couldn't even believe what I was watching. The difference in the comments between the videos shows how oblivious people are. I was that way too, but now this song is weird to me. Everyone has their own thoughts on the objectification of women it creates or the rape culture society has. I don't want to comment about whether there is or isn't because it is a tough subject, but I just wanted to try and stop the line of oblivious singalong masses.

Hello. So today's song is I Need Your Love by Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding.

Many people are confused why this has only Ellie singing, yet it's Calvin's song.  Well guys, if you didn't know already Calvin Harris is a DJ among other things and makes the music for this. He just has her singing it. I was kind of surprised to find out that his name isn't Calvin Harris. It isn't even close to that actually. I understand that some people change their name a bit to make it easier for fans but...I don't see why Adam Wiles would have that problem. I guess maybe he just wanted a stage name? Whatever, he makes good beats regardless of what he calls himself. If you've followed my blog for its entirety, you'll know that I like Ellie Goulding. I was even a fan before she got hugely popular because I found her Elton John cover. That isn't important though since music is meant to be shared and viewed with everyone, but I like to remember how I find things and people. I'm curious about you guys. Have you ever found a band or musician before they went mainstream? Let me know.

Hey. So today's song is All-American Boy by Steve Grand.

This one is controversial. It gained huge attention when George Takei shared it on Facebook. He said "I am constantly amazed by young people today, especially how different their attitudes towards sex and sexuality are. Here is a courageous young country music artist, Steve Grand--the first ever openly gay one in his genre. No agent, no label, just pure heart. (And quite the looker, I might add. Oh myyy.) He's racked up over 800,000 views in just a few days. Let's add a few more."  Since then, the views have just about doubled. Obviously everyone has their own opinion about whether this is right or wrong, but my argument is that it's about time something like this happened. People are making a big stink about this because it's two guys. Girls making out with each other gets plastered everywhere in music videos and television. No one complains. Flip that around and bring in guys to kiss and suddenly the whole world cares about the rights and sanctity of marriage. Here's what I think society: Fuck you and your double standard. Fuck you and your constant contradictions. Let everyone be who they are, it's not like being gay is a virus that will attack you. I don't know how many times it needs to be said, but equality is the way of the future. Accept it. I know some of you might be reading this any decide you hate me for my views, but it needed to be said at least once.

Year 2, Day 353

Hello!! Today I give you Freedom by George Michael.

He is so amazing. I loved the stuff he did with Wham! and I love what he did on his own. This song is particular is pretty great. He wrote, produced and performed it and it's actual title is Freedom '90. This is because Wham released a song called Freedom and they didn't want to confuse them. Although now I'm pretty sure this is the first one people would think of. Contrary to popular belief this isn't a meant to be a coming out song although it does fit perfectly. It's actually about Wham! and the person he was then and who he had become when he wrote this song. He didn't want that image anymore because he wasn't the same guy. This message becomes drastically clear since every time he says freedom in the song, there is an explosion of an iconic piece that signified him in the public's minds after the Faith music video.  He blows up the jukebox, leather jacket and guitar. He also refused to be in the video because he was tired of being in front of the camera, so the video is filled with models. He doesn't appear in it at all. Regardless of what it was meant to mean, it has many different ones now depending on the person. Coming out, the end of relationships, being released form prison...they all use this song. Personally, I will be blasting this the day I graduate from post secondary... if it happens. Wish me luck.

Hi. So today's song is Shine by Laura Izibor.

Shazam is a marvelous thing isn't it? Now I can find some really great stuff that I hear, but don't know. This song is an example of that. It was on the radio and I listened for a bit before deciding I like it and needed to know who sang it. So I was digging around trying to find my phone to Shazam it. There is always that scary bubble of panic that you wont find it in time and will lose the song. At least I always get that. I like how in the video she's in different musical era's. There is the doo wop, disco and rock times. It makes sense because her song is a little mix of all of those. It's just a really entertaining song and you should check it out.

Hey Guys. So today's song is Can't Stay Away by IM5 and Bella Thorne.

It's a baby boy band! Oh, they are so adorable...I can't help but treat new boy bands as children because none will ever live up to the groups I had when I was younger. The backstreet boys and N*Sync dominated that market for so long that  I can't consider them in the same field. So when One Direction came along, I just laughed. Now there's a lot more, including IM5. If I had to choose I prefer these guys to One Direction for a couple of reasons. 1)They all have clearly significant personality differences. They are harder to mix up. 2) At least one of the members plays an instrument and they are not shy to show that. 3) They have better dance moves. 4) Clearly the most diverse group ever. Equality! So those are easy to point out, but mostly I found and like them because of this. I can't tell you how crazy into this song I have been for the past couple weeks. It's so damn catchy! The fact that they are singing Disney lyrics to classic boy band tunes is incredible. It adds a whole other layer of awesome. So I suggest watching at least one of these music videos. Before I go I just want to point out that I didn't mention Bella until now because she is completely useless in this. I also will not do the usual boy band trap in picking my favorite because these guys are way too young for that to be okay.

Hello. Today I give you Running Back To You by For The Foxes.

Warped Tour is a touring music festival held in venues such as parking lots or fields and stages are build for the entertainment. Vans has sponsored the tour every year since 1995 so it's pretty much always called Vans Warped Tour. It started out as punk rock showcase, but its gotten more diverse in recent years. I mention this because For The Foxes are going to be at this years tour. Warped is pretty much the best way to find new awesome music. I've never been, but my sister went the year it was held in my city. Anyone I've talked to who has gone to Warped Tour has said the same thing. It's amazing and they would go again in a heart beat. For The Foxes is just one of the incredible bands that will be there so if you get the chance, go to this. Then proceed to tell me how awesome it is.

Hi. So today's song is Noah by Amber.

This has the usual indie band sound, and that is popular at the moment. It's a lot like Imagine Dragons who hit the big time. As for the band, "Amber came together at university in Nottingham where they began working on evolving their sound at the end of 2012. A cover of Imogen Heap's 'Hide and Seek' was put online to keep the band's building fan base happy whilst they were putting together what is now their debut EP, 'Noah'." Obviously this dong is from the EP, since they are bother titles Noah. I was trying to find more information about them for you, but there are apparently a few bands with the same name. These guys for sure though are the 'Amber' from the UK. For more information I think we're just going to have to wait and see what these guys do. I believe it's worth it though, so give them a listen.

Hey. So today's song is In Love With A Girl by Gavin DeGraw.

I realize that this is a rock song. It has electric guitars and a rock tune, but I can't help but feel the country vibe from it. I blame it on his voice. It has a slight twinge in it that I associate with country singers. The piano doesn't help either. Anyway this cross genre feel is the reason I wanted to put it on my blog. It's stampede here right now, and I'm not really interested in the drunk fest it's turned into, but I do enjoy the country aspect of it with the chuck wagon races and bull riding. It's become less hardcore country over the years and more rock country lite... What I mean can be described by this song. It's not country, but it's not rock and yet it's catchy enough that you don't care about the case of mistaken identity. That is what stampede is like. Since I wanted to do a thing for stampede this seemed the best option. So this is a celebration of what it is on the last day it's happening this year. Come check it out next year if you're curious.

Morning! So today's song is Wait For You by Elliot Yamin.

I had completely forgotten about this song! Oh I'm so glad I found it again. I've always loved it. This song is a beautiful example of what a ballad is, and usually what a ballad is about. More often than not ballads are about lost love, or love in general. I wasn't aware of this, but Elliot was on American Idol. I guess it makes sense, he does have an incredible voice. American Idol is kind of dead and buried now. I'm glad we got a few artists out of it before the explosion of reality shows made it too generic. You guys might have heard this song before, but even if you have I think you should listen to it again. I appreciate it a lot more now that I'm older. Check it out.

Hello. Today I give you Radio by Tim Timebomb and Friends.

So this video comes complete with an explanation: "We wrote "RADIO" with our old friend Billie Joe 20 years ago in 1993. I got to see Green Day play recently at Fox Theater in Pomona. Amazing show! They killed it! Here's an acoustic take of "Radio" with The Interrupters backing." That's the year I was born, I now feel old... So it was written by Tim Timebomb, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Matt Freeman; and it features Tim on guitar and vocals, with Aimee Interrupter, Jesse Bivona, Justin Bivona, and Kevin Bivona on background vocals. Kevin also plays banjo and acoustic bass on this. It's a simple song in the fact that there aren't many instruments, but it is still an enjoyable song. In case you weren't sure why Tim mentioned Green Day, it's because Billie Joe Armstrong is lead vocals and guitar for them. I didn't know this collaborative songwriting existsed until a few days ago and I thought it was pretty interesting, so I decided to share it with you.

Hey Guys. So today's song is Summer Is Over by Jon McLaughlin ft. Sara Bareilles.

This is a really beautiful song. I know I show you guys a lot of Sara's music, but that's because I'm very fond of her. She is what's right with the music industry because she actually knows about music and can perform without all the little studio extras. This song is pleasant to listen to and they really mesh well together in the duet. I love that you can find like-minded people depending on what you're listening to. I was pleased to find people who listen to this also know who the Piano Guys are. This gives me a bit of hope in people today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that classical type music becomes 'cool' and we can get some of that musicality back in the mainstream. Anyway, check this song out and tell me what you think.

Hey. So today's song is Fragment Two by These New Puritans.

This band is a based from London, England. I wanted to share this with you for two reason. First, the top comment and seeing the whole video is awesome, because you can and it looks so cool. That's only slightly why though. I wanted you to hear this song because the transposition in it is incredible. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, the transposition of music refers to moving a collection of notes up or down in pitch by a constant interval. In other words, same rhythm in a different key. If you listen actively, you can hear it and it takes this song to new heights. Honestly, check this out. You wont regret it.

Hi. So today's song is Trying To be Cool by Phoenix.

Technically the week is over, but here is another international band anyway. These guys are from France. I wanted to talk to you a bit about the music video. It's directed by CANADA, which if I'm correct is a director collective from Barcelona, Spain....Interesting in itself, but what I thought was really cool is that this is part of the Creators Project. This project is about featuring innovators around the world who are pushing the boundaries of creative expression. You can see more on their website here. A little bit about this video that is mentioned on that site talks about the filming and I just want to share that with you. "The video, filmed entirely in live in full takes of the song, sees two film crews tackling the impressive task of continuously swapping shots every 25 seconds." Awesome, right? Check it out because it's worth your time.

Hey. So today's song is No One Does It Better by You Me At Six.

 

I'm ending off my impromptu international week with another British group that I had never heard off, but really enjoy. There's a lot I could say about the band, but I only want to share with you a comment on this video that made me giggle. "I have a You Me At Six poster in my room and they're seriously irritating me. They never stop staring! They watch me doing my stretches and they look so unimpressed. One day i got so annoyed that i actually marched out of my room. They're pervy too cuz they watch me getting changed. Josh's head is tipped slightly to one side and Matt looks like he's about to start drooling. The sad thing is I don't even have a hot body. Then I sing and they look unimpressed again. Last chance and they're movin out!" I definitely know what she means. Sometimes posters creep me out a bit. I have a Hedley poster across from my bed and a few times I've woken up and scared myself silly because I lock eye with one of them on the poster. Then I feel weird the rest of the day. If this happens to you too please share your story so I don't feel like a complete idiot.

Hello. Today I give you Bones by Young Guns.

So here is another band from the UK. They are a lot different than the guy yesterday, but still equally as good in their own way. This is more hardcore complete with rocker drums and screaming back up vocals. Fun Fact: The album that this song is on was recorded in Thailand. It seems the norm to go to a different country to work on albums. McFly is in Texas right now working on theirs. I just wish one of the bands I know and like would come here so I could meet them. Oh well, a girl can dream. Check these guys out and tell me what you think.

Hi. So today's song is I Won't Let You Go by James Morrison.

I seem to be making this an international week. This guy is from the UK, from a town called Rugby. I did not know this place ever existed. I can't really comment about them naming a town after a sport though, since we have a neighborhood here dubbed Tuxedo. I also didn't know that existed until a few weeks ago. Anyway, back to the song. His voice is pretty soulful and would be something that I'd play at a wedding. It's cute enough to go with all the gushiness of the event, plus it's upbeat and happy that I can jam to it. Give it  listen and check out some more of his stuff if you're up for it.

Hey Guys, so today's song is You're Gonna Love Again by NERVO.

This is an Australian group today. One of my cousins actually moved there not too long ago for school. These girls are twins named Miriam and Olivia Nervo, which explains the name for the group. They're pretty cool. I'm a little curious as to why everyone is floating in their music video...seems videos are getting less normal as time goes along. It might just be me though. Morning! So today's song is American Dream by Hypernova.

Because today is the fourth of July in the States, I thought it suiting to include something about it. Then I reconsidered. Songs about how great America is by Americans is kind of annoying. The cockiness of the performer is bearable, but the not so subtle American flags everyone bothers me. So instead here is a song titled for the States from someone else. This video also had a great description so I will just show you that instead of saying the same thing in different words. "Hypernova is a New York based Iranian rock band from Tehran. The band is made up of Raam, Kami, Kodi & Jam . Raam is the lead vocalist, Kodi is the lead guitarist, Kami is the drummer , Jam plays bass. Hypernova also has session musicians playing synths & keys at their live shows. Like many other Iranian rock bands, the group was formed in the wake of president Khatami's relaxed stance on cultural policies in Iran in the late 1990s and the early decade of the 21st century. Arguably, Hypernova is at the forefront of the Iranian "rock" movement, recently garnering the most attention and press coverage. This is not just due to the novelty of them being a rock band from Iran, but because they are being recognized as a solid rock band, with accomplished musicians that produce well-written songs." So there you have it. A way to celebrate the impression America has given without hearing it from overly patriotic individuals. Hope you enjoy it!

Hello. So today's song is Euphoria, Take My Hand by Glasvegas.

These guys are a Scottish rock band. I think that's pretty awesome because I don't think I've featured on before. I've never heard of this band before now, but apparently they're not only known, they are also part of a sound comparative debate with two other bands. Now there have always been comparisons between bands, and there will always continue to be. It's how we explain the sound to other people and determine genres. For example I can think of too many times I witnessed and was apart of arguments between which boy band was better in the N*SYNC vs. Backstreet Boys days. This band in particular is being pitted against Coldplay and Muse. I don't really understand this because to me these three bands are completely different. Whatever. I'll leave the debate up to you, but I figured if I didn't know Glasvegas maybe you didn't either. So check them out.

Hey. So today's song is C'est La Vie by Khaled.

I've mentioned before that I don't need to speak the language to enjoy the music, and I still stand by that. So this song is not in English, it's French. I didn't really feel that way until I joined choir. It gave me a new appreciation for what the song can say without spelling it out for you. Most of the songs we did were Latin, but we did have same in French, German, and African. The western world in general has gotten better about artists singing in different languages thanks to Psy. The diverseness has always been there, but he made it go mainstream. The music itself gives you the feeling of the song, and that's really all that matters. Hi. So today's song is Brave by Sara Bareilles.

This is one of those songs that doesn't need any input from me.  You need to just stop whatever you're doing to watch the video and listen to the lyrics. I know that seems kind of lame for a blog post due to my lack of writing, but honestly, this song says it all.
